An exhibition of work by Matt Macpherson

Opening on the 17th March 2023

Matt Macpherson, artist, champion Kilwinning archer and pharmacist grew up in Saltcoats, North Ayrshire, on the West Coast of Scotland.

The son of a pharmacist who died when he was 11, Matt nurtured dreams of becoming an artist or musician, and took up the trombone in his teens. At college in Glasgow he joined a jazz band, The Back o Town Syncopators, who were signed by Decca and Columbia labels.  After a successful career in London and on tour, he returned to Scotland to take over the family pharmacy and found time to indulge in his favourite activities – mountain climbing, archery and music – as well as his passion for painting.

Fascinated by the Old Masters, in  particular Hans Holbein the Younger, who drew and painted with a rare precision that Matt sought to replicate in his work. Later painters of hyperrealism such as Chuck Close, Robert Bechtle, Richard Estes, Audrey Flack and Ralph Goings also inspired him.

With no formal art training he developed his inimitable technique for depicting surfaces and textures in meticulous detail. Working in his preferred medium of gouache Matt became skilled in painting textures, surfaces, lighting effects and shadows.

His unique style work has been widely acclaimed having been exhibited at the annual exhibitions of Royal Scottish Academy (RSA), Royal Society of Painters in Watercolour (RSW), Scottish Artists and Artists Craftsmen (SAAC),  Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Art, (RGI) The Morrison Portrait Award, and other prestigious venues.
